Selecting a Fruit Tree

Generally the availability of fruit tree sizes is Standard, Dwarf, and Semi-Dwarf.

Dwarf Fruit Trees: Small trees are desirable for small spaces. Dwarf fruit trees can do considerably well in an 8' diameter plot of ground. They are easy to prune and harvest since they do not get tall. The fruit is standard size, but the production is less because of the limited tree size. Dwarf trees are not as long-lasting as the standard size trees. Most dwarf trees commence fruit production in 3 to 5 years.

Semi-Dwarf Fruit Trees: Medium-sized trees will need a growing area of about 15' diameter. Semi-dwarfs could range in stature from 10 to 16' and require yearly cutting back to maintain the height and bear little or no fruit, particularly after a season of large yield. Most fruit trees established nowadays are semi-dwarf, since they produce heavy crops for their size and they can easily being pruned and harvested.

Standard Fruit Trees: The large, back yard age-old apple tree is a classic. The lone option of size anyone had prior to the development of the smaller hybrids. Standards need more space and are a more sizable job to cut back and harvest. They could grow to 25 - 30', or more in height if left alone.

However, if you desire a "point of reference" tree that your children can climb up and swing from, plant a standard fruit tree. They need several years to reach full size; therefore it is more likely that might be your grandchildren who do the swinging. Most standard trees start production in 3 to 5 years.

Regardless of the size of the tree, some pruning and yard work under the tree will always be available for you, so you should take this in to consideration when picking out tree size. However, do not let this put you off. In a few short years you will be apple to pick fresh, juicy, chemical free fruit for yourself and your family. Eating fruit provides your body with food for health (medicinal properties) that promote and maintain good health.

However, when you choose a smaller tree you get:a manageable size crop, plant a greater number of fruit trees, a lot easier to spray, prune, net, and harvest than the standard large trees.
